Day by Day Summary
- Day 1: On the first day we start with the pick up from your hotel around 5am. Then we will travel 3 hours by bus to km 82 from there we begin the hike that lasts 6 to 7 hours to the first camp.
- Day 2: This day we wake up early and begin our hike up the highest pass of the Inca Trail until we reach the next camp.
- Day 3: Today you will be able to visit several archaeological sites and also enjoy panoramic views. like this Inca site Wiñayhuayna and Sayaqmarca among others.
- Day 4: Today discover Machu Picchu! with a stunning sunrise. Today’s hike is only 2 hours to get to Machu Picchu.

This amazing adventure begins with an early pick up from your hotel around 4:30 am, then we head to Ollantaytambo where we can enjoy breakfast and it is also your last chance to buy things you can use on the hike, then we head to km 82 where our journey to Machu Picchu officially begins. Here, we will introduce you to the rest of the team that will accompany you during the 4 days and 3 nights hike, the chef and the porters.
Today's hike begins with 3 hours of relatively flat terrain to Pata Llacta, an impressive archaeological site which we will admire from a special point of view and we will also enjoy the delicious lunch prepared by the chef.
After lunch, you will have another 3 - 4 hours of hiking until you reach our first private campsite in Huayllabamba (9,843 ft / 3,000 m).
At the end of each day we will have a tea time while our chef prepares dinner. Our guide will tell you stories, cultures and traditions of the area and go over the plans for the next big day.

We will wake up on our second day with a cup of tea and coca tea and enjoy a nutritious and warm breakfast. After breakfast we will take advantage of the shade of the mountains, walk on 400-year-old Inca stone steps to the place where we will have lunch in a valley Llulluchapampa, which has impressive views. To get there, we will ascend a steep uphill for 2 to 3 hours.
After having a nice lunch we continue the hike for 2 more hours until we reach the top of Huarmiwañusca Mountain (Dead Woman Pass) which marks the highest elevation of our trip at 13,780 feet (4200 m). At this highest point you will experience an unforgettable moment as the top of this mountain is a sacred place for all the ancient Incas; either way, you have overcome the hardest part of your trip. From there you will be able to take stunning photos.
Now there will be a 2 – 3 hour descent towards the Pacay Mayo Valley to reach tonight’s campsite once you arrive you will enjoy a 1 hour family tea and another amazing buffet dinner.

Our 3rd day of 4 day tour starts the same with hot tea and coca mate, then you will have breakfast and get ready for the most impressive day of the hike. After breakfast is over you start with a steep but short climb (about 1 hour) to the ruins of Runkuracay, at this point our guide will explain stories of this area. Then we continue 1 more hour to the Runkuracay pass (the second pass of Runkuracay 12,956 ft / 3,950 m).
From here, the descent downhill begins and will take you through a short tunnel and small viewpoint on top of a promontory. From there you can appreciate the beautiful valley and you will see the Inca site of Sayaqmarca, an ancient Inca city. Here our guide will provide interesting historical facts, local legends. Once you have rested, your hike will continue until you reach Chaqui Cocha where you can enjoy another lunch prepared by the professional chef.
After lunch, the hike continues and becomes exceptionally beautiful, where you can appreciate the 95% original Inca trail, passing by the ruins of Phuyupatamarca and descending to Wiñaywayna and Inti Pata. While enjoying spectacular views of the Urubamba Valley along the sacred Willcamayu River, you will descend some 2000 stone steps to Wiñaywayna, known as the infinitely less crowded baby Machu Picchu. This is where we will spend the night and have a delicious buffet dinner that will be the perfect end to the last full day on the trail. There we will say goodbye to the porters and the chef.

On our last day of the classic Machu Picchu trek, we wake up very early for the highlight of the hike: We head straight to the checkpoint and wait until 5:30 am, passing the checkpoint we begin our 1-hour hike to the Sun Gate (Intipunku).
From this point you will be able to observe a spectacular sunrise over Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate, a truly unforgettable sight. Next, we begin a 1-hour descent to Machu Picchu, arriving at the last checkpoint around 8 am.
The guide will take you on a full 2-hour tour of the lost city of the Incas. If you have time, you can climb the Huayna Picchu mountain (tickets must be booked in advance). After the tour, you will take the bus from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included) and then the panoramic train to Ollantaytambo. Once there, our Coca Expeditions Travel team will take you safely to your hotel in Cusco.

It is important to note that you will not be bringing all of your stuff on this trek; you will only be bringing the essentials for the 4-day, 3-night trek to the Inca Trail and leaving the rest of your luggage in Cusco. We will provide you with a duffel bag to put 7 kilos of your stuff in; this should include your sleeping bag and air mattress. The porters will carry the duffel bags during the trek to Aguas Calientes town.

The Inca Trail trek can depart any day of the week, from March to January. We do not do it in February due to Inca Trail maintenance.
